by admin on July 28, 2010

Nursing today is a combination of many qualities and heavy responsibilities.  Nurses need to be caring and skilled but they also need to be clear headed and detail oriented.  Their assessment of the patient can make the all the difference in the quality of their patient’s treatment and overall experience.  One of the major component’s to the health-care experience is the ability of the nurse and their critical thinking process.

Good nursing revolves around “critical thinking”

The connection between the process of “critical thinking” and nursing might come as a surprise to most people.  Aside from the theoretical and practical training that any nurse must go through before starting to work in the actual health-care system, she will also need to have the ability to make rapid and precise evaluations of her patients, if she is to be a proficient nurse.

Understanding concepts and being able to process them efficiently may just mean the difference between life and death of the patients.  Nurses provide hands-on care plus being held responsible for everything that they do, see and report.  Emergency room nurses are often responsible for the care and speed at which a patient receives care.  Not only is her proficiency relied upon for the patient’s care, but also for the comforting of the patient’s family and friends.

A nurse’s responsibilities:

One of the nurse’s duties is to record all the particulars of a patient’s condition while receiving treatment.  When taking care of a patient, nurses must be very meticulous in their documentation of the case, since even the tiniest detail can help form a clear perspective and enhance the quality of the treatment.  Along with administrative abilities, nurses must also possess good communication skills.  The communication and organizational skills of a nurse are mostly valued in the emergency room.

Critical thinking is the link that binds your nursing skills

To achieve a high level of communication and organization the staff nurse must quickly perform an accurate evaluation of the patient’s condition as well as assess any changes as they occur in the patient.  Evaluation, accuracy, organizing, prioritizing and reporting or documenting plus using all the knowledge, education, skills and experience they have gathered in their nursing journey comprises today’s valuable staff nurse.  At the base of all this is the process known as critical thinking.

As you can see, there are heavy responsibilities for the skilled nurse whether she is assisting or staff nurse or running the floor.  They have to skillfully organize and document all their duties and make precise and honest assessments of their own work.  It all begins with critical thinking and a thorough command of language and concepts.  At one point or other in our lives we all had to rely on the analytical skills and knowledge of a nurse. And those who haven’t probably will. Therefore, we cannot help but be grateful to the wonderful nurses performing such a demanding, yet meaningful work.
