Does Your Child Need ADHD Drugs?

Over the past few years ADHD drugs, such as Adderall and Ritalin, have become popular drugs for abuse. People who do not suffer ADHD symptoms and do not actually need the drugs find an unusual high when they use them. Many parents wonder if their child actually needs ADHD drugs. The following is a look at some of the things to consider before putting your child on ADHD drugs.

1.    Other treatment options. Medication may be the fastest and easiest way to treat the symptoms of ADHD but there are other options. So, if you have the ability to take some time on the problems things like behavior therapy, education counseling, talk therapy, and similar options are safer. These are options where your child works with a counselor to address problems and come up with ways to manage them. Usually the counselors will help them to develop methods or tricks for concentrating and give them tools for success in education. This is the healthiest way to manage ADHD.

2.    Risks of ADHD drugs. One of the biggest risks associated with ADHD medication is the potential for addiction. The fact is that many of the side effects alone are enough to outweigh the benefits unless you see a huge change in your child’s behavior and concentration.

3.    How your child responds to ADHD drugs. The drugs can have a dramatic impact for some while minimal for others. If they do not make significant changes in your child, it may not be worth the associated risks.

4.    Potential for abuse. The fact is when you use drugs for any reason there will always be the potential for abuse. ADHD drugs are stimulants, and are often used like a softer form of cocaine. They can be ground up, sniffed, snorted or just used inappropriately. If you have any doubts about your child’s ability to use their medication properly, it is best to keep them off it.

5.    Long term. Having your son or daughter on ADHD drugs to help them get through school may be helpful in the short term, but it probably won’t do much for them in the long run. ADHD drugs do not cure the disorder so symptoms return quickly when the child stops taking the medication. Instead of masking the symptoms of the condition, a better option is to try to teach them how to manage the symptoms on their own. In the end it may be better to for them to learn skills for managing their disorder and problem solving without the aid of drugs.
